Opening Event – Friday 16 October 6-9pm
A group exhibition including and in response to the work ‘Greg: Powdermill’ by Tom Hunter from his exhibition “A Journey Home”.
Hunter’s exhibition “A Journey Home” was shown at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery between February and June 2019.
A contemporary photographic documentation of the Hastings region, created through collaboration with taxi drivers from 247 Taxis, that references the collection held within Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, bringing to the fore the many historical layers on which Hastings rests. The show brought forth considerations of how these layers are forged by the flow of people over time, through the townscapes, landscapes and cultures.
Lucy Bell (Lucy Bell Gallery) speaks of the creation of the work, saying, “the taxi drivers, who represent the diverse community of Hastings, were invited by Hunter to choose their favourite locations in the area, to be photographed at either dusk or dawn during the periods known as the ‘golden hour’ and the ‘blue hour’. In this way, Hunter pays tribute to Turner and the many other artists that have worked here, inspired by the natural landscape and incredible light conditions. The ‘golden hour’ is the period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset when is redder and softer.
The opposite period is the ‘blue hour’ which occurs just after sunset or just before sunrise. In the artist’s words “It is the use of light that ties the pictures together and brings a sense of belonging to the landscape”. These delicate visual layers are set against the verbal histories of the drivers, who in a short journey recount the stories of their lives and the particular journeys that have
brought them to Hastings. These recordings were included within the exhibition.”
On Tom Hunter’s website (linked below), the images he created are shown along with the paintings held by Hastings Museum and Art Gallery they reference.
As PhotoHastings, we sought to enter into a dialogue with this work. We looked to produce pieces in response to the theme and the images held within the exhibition “A Journey Home”.
We have centred the exhibition around the image ‘Greg: Powdermill’, itself created in reference to the work held in Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, ’Harmony Cattle Watering, Pevensey, East Sussex’ by Sidney Dennant Moss (1885–1946).
