The Mind’s Eye

An exhibition of 24 photographers coming together through a collaborative public open call, between PhotoHastings and Sullen Riot Curation.

Curator Mx. J Nash’s Introduction

Since the 19th century abstract photography has drawn people to view images which are alien to what is real or literal.

In 1951, MoMA’s Abstraction in Photography exhibition showcased photographers looking at the world through a different lens. It is not inconceivable that abstract expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko were inspired by developments and movements in photographic techniques. It is my firm belief, with artists such as Richard Pousette-Dart experimenting with double exposures and surreal darkroom techniques as far back as the 1940’s, that photographers have always been the pioneers of abstract expressionism.

The 24 photographers showing their work in this exhibition are challenging the view of popular photography and presenting fragments of our known world at odds with the immediate environment. The subjects photographed depart from their original meanings, contexts and realities.

“This exhibition does not fail to challenge the boundaries of abstract photography, creating artwork that fuses colour, movement and the unintentional to explore a higher level og looking and seeing. The pieces move readers into a world of abstraction, taking them beyond the everyday and pointing the way to a place of contemplation.”
