Food for Thought
A photographic installation by Gary Willis
“I wanted to create an installation to provoke visitors with something of life now, demanding involvement and action, utilising photography for positive good”
With ‘Food for Thought’ Gary is authentically raising awareness of food poverty and food insecurity. By photographing the mouths of real people, facing these hard times, he then presents the mouths as table settings, place mats and coasters, laid out on a table. Whilst reading the shameful food poverty facts and figures as table menu cards, visitors were encouraged to ‘Help put food into these mouths’.
The offer of hope is a call for donations for the local Dom’s Food Mission charity – who would occupy a place setting at the head of the table, offering some of their own statistics of how they help.
“In creating the work I visited the queues at Dom’s Food Mission hubs, politely explaining my plan, and that by taking part, I would be helping Dom’s, who would in turn be helping them.”
