26th November 2009.

Exhibition: "After The Crowds Have Gone" is a new exhibition by Emma Bryant at the Land of Green Ginger cafe restaurant in Hastings Old Town. "This is a collection of work taken on a Lomo LC-A, a little Russian compact camera. It has a wonderfully vivid lens and a shutter that is designed to stay open for up to 2 minutes in low light. The idea for the project emerges from Emma being raised in the old town and being witness each year to the end of summer. The photos depict the sombre yet colourful end to a hectic season. A melancholy element has been captured beautifully by the fascinating Lomo LC-A. The saturated colour adds a sense of fun and light relief but also hints at sadness and the wear and tear left behind by the crowds". All work is for sale. Exhibition continues until the new year. 45 High Street, Hastings TN34 3EN.

23rd November 2009.

Exhibition: The next show at F-ish in Robertson St is "Demi-Monde" by Alexander de Cadenet. "This series of mobile phone photos, taken over the past two years, captures situations during twilight or the dead of night. 15th November 2009.

Publication: "Robin Bell's Silver Footprint" celebrating his 35 years of darkroom printing for the brightest names in photography was one of the highlights of the year at the Independent Photographers Gallery in Battle. The book of the show has now been published by Dewi Lewis in an edition of 1000. It is available directly from Robin Bell for just £25 (he might even sign it for you!). Or, if you want it very slightly cheaper, but Amazon takes 60% plus costs and the creator gets almost zilch, you can get it here. Printed to the highest standards this is a gorgeous 142 page hardback art book filled with wonderful pictures and a commentary by Robin. A definite future collectible, this is a must-have for anyone who loves monochrome photography and the art of the darkroom. The show is now at the Richard Young Gallery in Kensington until 25th November if you'd like another chance to see the original prints.

14th November 2009.

Exposure: There's now another place to read about photography in this area. Hastings Online Times, our new local 'paper', has a photography section as part of its coverage of the arts, politics and many other areas of interest. No court reports or advertorial content so far. And no mention of '1066 country' (would you call Poland '1939 country'?). Good luck people, this town needs an articulate voice like yours.

13th November 2009.

Education: From Martin Pearce (via HCMC list) - Image Editing Tuition at GILL. "In two weeks time GILL will be offering tuition in Image Editing and Manipulation in their recently re-furbished premises. This venture is a response to many of our clients' requests for help when rendering their images in PhotoShop and DTP software. We're having a small suite of new workstations installed and will be offering short courses to classes of three clients at a time. The target group would ideally have some computer skills (word processor, file management etc) but be unconfident when working on digital images." For further information call 01424 424359/446882 or email info@martinpearceart.com.

11th November 2009.

Planning for a future: The planning application for Hastings' eagerly awaited Jerwood Gallery is being re-run. Please support this proposal here. (Planning application number HS/FA/09/00576). If you did this earlier in the year, it must be repeated to be registered this time around. The "No" campaign is here should you wish to fight to keep the coach park just the way it is. The Beacon, St Marys Terrace, Hastings.
PHOTOGRAPHY'S FRACTURED TIME. Andrew Moran and Nigel Green are two contemporary photographers who play with our minds. They challenge and question our preconceived acceptance of images and give us much to think about in terms of photographic representation, narrative, cultural memory and the fracturing of time.
Andrew’s presentation explores the unfolding of visuals to address motion and repetition. He invites us to look beyond the photographic surface, with its speed of delivery, to reach through layers of time and fragmentation, to find – what?
Nigel’s images may first appear to be literal representations of modernist architecture. His photographs of First and Second World War buildings in Picardy are reconstructions born out of trauma: they have a history of melancholy and loss, despite being created towards an optimistic future. The past and the future are compressed in one image, time is both fragmented and bonded.
Chaired by Grace Lau (gl@gracelau.plus.com). £5 (£4 Soco members & students) entry includes wine & refreshments.

Exhibition: ANDREW MORAN - aSPACE Gallery in the School of Art & Design at Hastings College. 13th March - 2nd April 10am - 3.30pm. "A photograph is the captured instant of free will, it can also be the planned and deterministic image.
The moment of the unfolding into the unfolded".

Spring Equinox 2009.

Welcome to version 1.0 of PHOTOHASTINGS, a directory of photography links for anyone with an interest in photography in and around Hastings. Whether you want to find a Hastings photographer, links to the best photography resources on the net or see what's happening locally, you'll find it here.

It's taken a while for me to realise that the amount of interest in photography around Hastings is matched by its diversity and quality. Photographic culture on this part of the coast is thriving and could do with its own address book. PHOTOHASTINGS is a no-budget, out of hours, lo-fi undertaking to make a website that recognises and inspires photography in Hastings and helps us all to improve how we think about, make and use photographs.

PHOTOHASTINGS will always be a work in progress. Please help it to grow & develop by letting me know what's missing or incorrect.
