About PhotoHastings

PhotoHastings was started by Alex Brattell on the vernal equinox 2009 in response to the growing interest in, and quality of, photography in the Hastings area.

It is a resource for anyone with a serious interest in any type of photography and so will try to link only to sources of quality information based on first hand recommendations. The definition of "local" is necessarily loose; some links, places to buy materials for example, are elsewhere in the UK but offer something that might not be available in East Sussex.

Recommendations and suggestions are always very welcome. I'd also really appreciate knowing how you found this site useful so I can improve it.

This is an independent, entirely subjective website which aims to encourage access to information of high quality. It makes no claims for the truth or accuracy of anything and is updated whenever possible.

There is a strong mix and mass of creative activity in this part of the South East. Photography in its many forms is an important element of this story, and at a crucial time in the medium's development. A picture can be created with a pinhole camera made from a toilet roll or with a shiny gadget that bleeps when you smile. It can then be seen worldwide in minutes. The web brings all this diversity together in one place. PhotoHastings attempts to extract a local perspective from this global view.

PhotoHastings provides an index of possibilities intended to be practical and inspiring. It also aspires to contribute to the evolution of photographic practice and debate in Hastings & St Leonards On Sea, a town that has more than its fair share of interesting people and places.

The PhotoHastings logo was designed by Steven Cook using Paralucent by Rian Hughes at Device.
